CHICAGO (CBS) — Bears tight end Cole Kmet was honored as one of the league’s players of the week for his performance against the Jaguars in London, but it wasn’t for his pair of touchdowns.
Instead, Kmet was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, after he stepped in for injured long snapper Scott Daly in the Bears’ dominant 35-16 win.
Kmet becomes the first long snapper ever to be awarded Special Teams Player of the Week, after executing successful snaps on all five of the team’s extra points. His only hiccup was a high snap on a Cairo Santos field goal attempt that ended up getting blocked.
The fifth-year tight end is off to an impressive start with the Bears and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who was the No. 1 overall pick this year.
Kmet ranks 4th among all tight ends with 26 catches, is tied for 2nd among all tight ends with three touchdowns, and ranks 3rd among all tight ends with 289 receiving yards.
